Drinking After RNY
I am scheduled to have my RNY in thirty days..YAY And I have a few questions about drinking afterwards. I drink socially now, when we are out to dinner or when I have a girls night. I am just wondering what drinking is like status post. I have asked my surgeon and some of his office staff but they always say that not drinking is best. Maybe this is true, but it doesn't sound like fun.
How long after surgery have people waited to drink? What types of drinks do you have? I am assuming that margaritas will NOT be allowed (oh well, small price to pay) but is is just wine or has anyone tried mixed drinks? How many drinks have you actually had in a sitting?
Any information will be greatly appreciated!!
My dr. told me to wait till 6 months out to start drinking again. and i did lol. the day i turned 6 months out i got drunk haha, don`t follow my example. for me is like before i don`t get drunk easier or anything just be careful to not over do it 'cuz of the calories and `cuz it can be a transfer adiction. lots of wls patients have problems with alcohol after surgery so be careful.
and also be careful with the mixer. use diet juices or natural water with twist of lime or "healthy choises" like that.
i also if you choose frappe drinks ur gonna drink less cuz is gonna be heavy in ur pouch 'cuz of the ice.
soo good luck! for us, party girls, is really hard to stay away of the drinks but you have to do it, its sooo gonna worth it.
hugs.

Honestly I can't remember how long I waited until I started drinking again. I had all the intentions NOT to drink because it's really not good to for many different reasons. But when I DO drink.... I take shots and follow it with Crystal Lite. For example my favorite thing to drink for a while was Dragonberry Rum w/ Strawberry/Banana/Orange Crystal Lite. It's hard not to drink the sweet licks when chasing with Crystal Lite the regular rum etc is hard to get down with CL.
I think it's unusual, but I can put down ALOT of alcohol........ it's probably a good thing I don't drink too often.
Also, like one of the other girls said, be careful because it can become a transfer addiction. When I did start drinking again I would drink Friday and Saturday every single weekend. It was nice to finally be a light weight as before it took a **** load to get me drunk.......

Yeeeah.... lol
Okay so, I've drank a few times and I'm about 5 months out. I would say to wait a little longer than that. AT LEAST until you have your diet figured out. Mine is still kind of screwy with not knowing everything I can tolerate and what-not. But, that's just me.
I probably drink things I shouldn't, to be honest. White Russians is my thing. But with the cream in there and the Kalua (spelled that wrong I'm sure) I doubt it's especially good for me lol Luckily it takes me exactly half of one to get a good buzz on so I drink maybe 2 in a night with an occasional "shot" (which ends up in a glass with ice and some sort of diet mixer to get sipped!).
Just take it slow, take it easy. You may not even want to drink.

I had some Coke and Rum and I am 2 months out. I know I shouldn't have but I was curious....shoot me!? Ummmm, I got tipsy really quick! Quicker than I used to...it took like 10-15 mins....

I take the same attitude about drinking as with everything else post-op, moderation. If you can limit your intake (after all, it is empty calories) and limit how often you have alcohol then I don't see a problem with it....after the appropriate amount of time has passes that your surgeon has told you. I'm not an all or nothing person and I'd be lying to say I'm never going to drink alcohol again so just be responsible and know your limits....oh yeah, and have fun!

My surgeon said to wait one year. After a few months I was drinking... I can tolerate anything so I have been able to drink any and everything. I get drunk very quickly off a little of alcohol and it wears off quickly as well... if I drink for an evening (i.e. clubbing) I will hit a point where I get drunk and stay drunk for hours after my last drink. When I was drinking regularily I would be ok with it... took a break and started drinking again I would see what effect it really had on me... I would always feel like crap the next day no matter how little I drank... extremely bloated and very dehydrated... the bloat would last a few days. As I got further out I realized how much those 'empty calories' were hurting me and making me feel blah... I will have a drink now and then (typically something with dinner like wine or a rita at a mexican place) but try and limit to just that... I really dont care for the after effects the alcohol has on my body. As you can see I am over 3 years out so it took me a while to come to this realization. I was never a heavy drinker... mainly just drinks when going out to eat or an occasional happy hour... and saturday nights out... wasnt big w/drinking at home.
